I've been trying to convince myself that my correct road to HD is through the Panasonic HVX200.  Here's an interesting post from hess media report that describes some of the specific logistics of tapeless event work (unless, of course, you get a big box of $900 P2 cards or $1800 100GB Firestores).

One of the features that particularly appeals to me about this camera is it's ability to pre-record, which dumps three seconds of buffered HD video to the card prior to pressing the record button.  That's just wicked.
